Sona Khatik is a well know radio personality in Kapilvastu. Her simple yet confident persona is supplemented by her mellow and sweet voice and her alluring, down-to-earth nature is charismatic.
Her radio programs, mainly in her local language, Awadhi, is every local household's favorite. Strangers greet her with a smile of acknowledgement in the streets and she is overwhelmed with praise and recognition she has garnered for her work. But a thought also triggers in Sona's mind 'Would she have got the same treatment from the people in the society if she was an uneducated Dalit girl?'
Sona khatik stop going to school as her family needed an extra breadwinner. Sona started tutoring small children in her nearby locality.This small initiation proved fruitful for her as she managed enough money to pay her tuition fees and was also able to contribute some amount to her family.Today, she run programs on radio in own local language 'Awadhi' and, by judging her skills, Equal Access Nepal has also appointed her as a local radio producer for a program on education.'
