The true story was captured by Emmy Nominee Director Magan Mylan in a 39 minute documentary Smile Pinki. It cast Pinky Sonkar as the lead.

The documentary was nominated for the Best Documentary at the Oscars and won the award in 2009.



Pinky Sonkar had her brush with the glitterati when she was all of nine years old, hardly what a girl ostracized by society for being born with a cleft lip expects.

Pinky was born to a labourer Rajendra Sonkar in a village near Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, India. She was born with a cleft lip and lived with it until a corrective surgery was performed by plastic surgeon Dr Subodh Kumar Singh.
